Genesis is making serious strides into the luxury fray, starting with the all-new G90 flagship and repurposing the former Hyundai Genesis into the G80. All of a sudden, the Korean upstart has two of the best-looking sedans in the industry with an enticing value package, but now Genesis intends to deliver on thrill-seeking drivers’ needs as well.
Enter the G80 Sport, a Genesis with a new engine, some sharper looks, and impressive performance (at least on paper) to appeal to those who love to drive… and love to be seen driving.
New for 2018 is a 3.3-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 making a respectable 365 horsepower and 376 lb.-ft. of torque, mated to a sport-tuned 8-speed automatic and either rear- or all-wheel drive. The G80 Sport also gets a new continuously-controlled damping system that Genesis claims will improve handling and ride quality over the standard Genesis.
You’ll also be able to pick the Sport out in a Genesis lineup thanks to a cross-hatch dark chrome grille, dark 19-inch alloy wheels, and a more aggressive front and rear fascia. Inside, the G80 Sport gets some unique touches too, like special pedals, a sportier steering wheel, imitation suede headliner, carbon fiber effect trim and sport seats with contrast stitching.
Of course, this is still a Genesis, so value plays a big part, too. The G80 Sport still offers all of the standard features that the rest of the G80 lineup does, including smartphone projection tech, active safety features like automatic emergency braking, and convenience features like the ability to remotely start your car by commanding Amazon’s Echo device to do so.
The G80 Sport, then, might just be the best midsize sports sedan that most of your friends haven’t heard of… yet.
