Hokies are ranked No. 23 after back-to-back Thursday night victories



Virginia Tech football comes off of back-to-back Thursday night victories that pushed them up to No. 23 in the latest polls and into first place in the Coastal Division of the ACC Standings. The Hokies will finish their four-road-games in five-week stretch with a contest in Durham, North Carolina this Saturday. The Hokies will face Duke in Wallace Wade Stadium with kickoff slated for 3:30 p.m. The game can be seen on ESPNU.

TECH PRIMED FOR THURSDAY 2.0 KEY STATS ON HOKIES, BLUE DEVILS



  • The Hokies are 39-3 (.929) in ACC play when scoring 30+ points, including a 20-1 (.952) mark on the road.

  • VT has averaged 41.5 ppg in its six wins in 2016, scoring 30+ points in all those contests.

  • Duke is 5-17 at home under David Cutcliffe when permitting 30+ points, including four straight losses.

  • VT is outscoring opponents 67-16 in the first quarter and has shut out five teams in the opening quarter. Duke was outscored 14-0 at GT (10/29) and trailed 28-7 at half.

  • VT is outscoring opponents 122-59 in the second half, while Duke has been outscored 111-101 in the second half.

  • Duke has outscored its opponents by a slim 196-191 margin in 2016 (24.5-23.9 ppg).

QB JEROD EVANS ON RECORD PACE



  • QB Jerod Evans is coming off a season-high 406-yard performance at Pitt (10/27). He is on pace to throw 34 TDs over 13 games in 2016.

  • His 2,461 yards of total offense already rank as the 11th-best seasonal total in VT history. He’s on pace for 3,999 yards over 13 games. The current mark of 3,500 yards was set by QB Tyrod Taylor in 2011.

  • Evans is the second-leading rusher on the squad with 450 net yards, just five yards behind RB Travon McMillian (455).

  • He is on pace to finish the season with 731 rushing yards, which would be the second-highest seasonal mark by a Hokies’ QB over the past 20 seasons behind Taylor (738 in 2008).

  • Dating back to 1996, Evans could join Taylor, Michael Vick, Logan Thomas and Bryan Randall as the only QBs in Tech history to produce a 500-yard rushing season over that span.

  • He ranks fourth among P5 QBs with 251.4 rating.

HOTTEST HOKIES INDIVIDUAL NOTES



  • K Joey Slye leads ACC kickers in made FGs (16) and PPG (10.0). Only QB Lamar Jackson (96) has more total points (80).

  • WR Isaiah Ford is tied for third in the ACC in YPG (81.0) and receptions per game (5.8).

  • CB Greg Stroman is tied for the ACC lead with 11 PDs, while LB Tremaine Edmunds (12.0) is tied for third in TFLs. Stroman and S Terrell Edmunds are tied for fifth in the ACC with three INTs.

TURNOVERS COULD BE KEY



  • VT is tied for third in the ACC at +2 (16 takes/14 gives) in turnover differential, while Duke is last at -5 (16 takes/21 gives).
