With virtual reality, a multimedia take on Euripides and dance accompanied by 64 robotic instruments, technology will reign at the 2017 edition of Coil, Performance Space 122’s annual festival of innovative theater, music and dance.
The festival runs from Jan. 3 through Jan. 17 and opens with “CVRTAIN,” a virtual-reality work of theater from the experimental director Yehuda Duenyas. Billed as an “experience starring you,” the work simulates the feeling of being put onstage, alone and in the spotlight.
Among other theater highlights is the American premiere of “Real Magic” from the British troupe Forced Entertainment — under the artistic direction of Tim Etchells, who won the 2016 Spalding Gray Award, a prize awarded by a consortium that includes P.S. 122. The director Yara Travieso will present her interdisciplinary take on Euripides with “La Madea,” a dance-theater work and film in the style of a Latin disco-pop variety show.
Dance performances include a revival of “Custodians of Beauty” by the Bessie Award-winning choreographer Pavel Zustiak and his Palissimo Company. The Australian dance-makers Antony Hamilton and Alisdair Macindoe will present the American premiere of “Meeting,” a performance that involves 64 robotic instruments onstage.
