Virginia Tech is 0-3 against the spread over the last three weeks and just 1-3 ATS on the road this season. The Hokies will hit the road this week, visiting a venue they've never been to before, for a battle with Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon in South Bend.

Point spread: The Fighting Irish opened as three-point favorites, according to sportsbooks monitored by Odds Shark (line updates and matchup report).

Why Virginia Tech can cover the spread

Virginia Tech had a three-game winning streak snapped by a 30-20 upset loss to Georgia Tech last week. The Hokies lost a fumble on the opening kickoff, leading to a Yellow Jackets field goal, trailed 20-0 at the half and never recovered, going down as two-touchdown favorites.

Along the way, Virginia Tech also turned the ball over four times inside Georgia Tech territory. The Hokies outgained the Yellow Jackets on the day 437-343, and on the season, they have outgained nine of 10 opponents.

At 5-2 in conference play, Virginia Tech is tied for the lead in the ACC Coastal Division with North Carolina, and it owns the tiebreaker on the Tar Heels, thanks to a 34-3 victory in Chapel Hill back in October.

Why Notre Dame can cover the spread

Struggling through a lost season, Notre Dame is 2-1 both straight up and ATS over its last three games, including bombing Army last week 44-6 in San Antonio. The Irish took an early lead when C.J. Sanders returned the opening kickoff 92 yards for a score. They led 21-0 after the first quarter and 38-6 at the half on their way to an easy cover as two-touchdown favorites.

On the day, Notre Dame outgained the Black Knights 476-242 and won time of possession by a 34:22-25:38 margin. The Irish have now outgained each of their last four opponents and seven of 10 on the season.

At 4-6 overall, Notre Dame needs to win its last two games—the Irish finish at USC next week—to extend its six-season bowl streak.

Smart pick

Notre Dame is coming off one of its better outings of the season, while Virginia Tech is coming off one of its worst. But college football is a volatile betting landscape, and reversals of fortune happen every week. Plus, the Hokies hold edges in the ground game and on defense. The smart money here at online betting sites is on Virginia Tech.

Betting trends

Notre Dame is 3-8 ATS in its last 11 games in November.

Virginia Tech is 6-1 SU in its last seven games on the road.

The total has gone under in six of Virginia Tech's last eight games in Week 12.
