Health tips: Can we talk? About sex? Candidly? - Pueblo Chieftain

October is “Askable Adult” Month. By definition, an askable adult is someone who is seen as approachable by youths and is open to questions; this provides an opportunity to have open discussions about factors that can influence a youth’s life.

Research shows many youths want to talk to their parents or another significant adult about sex, relationships and sexual health. Youths who are able to talk about sex are less likely to engage in early and/or unprotected sexual intercourse than youths who haven’t talked to a trusted adult.

For many adults, discussing sex with youths can be overwhelming and scary. Adults can be embarrassed, unsure of how to start the conversation, and worry about giving too little or too much information.

A good place to start in becoming an askable adult is acquiring factual information about sex from reliable resources. Don’t forget sexuality also includes love and relationships. Think about your values and feelings about love, sex and relationships. Share this information with your youths; this will provide you an opportunity discuss values, expectations and protection.

Have a conversation that is mutually respectful and avoid the desire to dictate. You will create an invaluable safe place to talk and openness to discuss things later.

Remember to relax. Your youths understand aspects of sexuality are personal and being embarrassed is OK. They want to know what you believe and how you feel. If you don’t have an answer, let your youths know that and offer to find the answer, and then do so.
